Jim Hoogerhyde's Tesla powered Streamliner
The car that went 306.169 MPH on electric power! This was a major undertaking. The car’s previous belt design proved it was not strong enough to withstand the high torque of the modified Tesla LDU motor. A new arrangement was made with a quick-change rear end that solved the previous weak design. Once the car started staying together. A new battery had to be designed and built with Hybrid cells at its heart to withstand the high current demands of the motor. The Battery was built in-house with some help from friends. Once the battery pack was able to deliver the required current. The inverter was upgraded to the performance inverter. This gave it roughly 70 extra HP, with the high current demands and long continuous run times. The stator welded itself, which partially blew the battery up. Luckily, we designed the battery back case from steel as opposed to aluminum so it could withstand the major heat from the flaming cells. Once it was determined that the stator short caused the entire problem. We replaced it and went off to make more E2 and E3 records at El Mirage!
